The outermost lip of the wheel is called the flange, which is flared to form the bead seat. This bead seat holds the tire securely and maintains an airtight seal.

Safety humps are small protrusions on the inside of the bead seat that prevent the tire from slipping into the drop center of the wheel in case of a blowout. This feature helps drivers maintain control of the vehicle even with deflated tires.
